The Life and Music of Winifred Atwell, performed by Jan Preston.
The incredible story of a virtuostic piano player and entertainer, who was one of the
most remarkable stage personalities of her time. With over 20 million album sales, she made boogie woogie
and ragtime music popular in Britain and Australia from the 50’s through to the 80’s.
Her best-known (and crowd-pleasing favourite!) piece of ragtime music is “The Black and White Rag”,
released as a single that sold over a million copies, which gained new popularity when it was used as the theme music t0 the
UK TV series “Pot Black” .

In this fascinating and entertaining show, Jan recalls the life and music of HonkyTonk piano great, Winfred Atwell.
Toe-tapping Boogie and Ragtime music is combined with 150 images of Australia through the 50’s and 60’s as Jan recounts Winnie Atwell’s amazing life. Jan will be joined by Mike Pullman on drums, and well-known Brisbane jazz player, Andrew Shaw, on bass.

The daughter of a professional grifter tries to change her ways when she falls for the son of one of their victims, however her father talks her into one last score. Paulette McDonagh’s newly restored feature– the first feature directed by a woman in Australia – enjoys a live accompaniment by Jan Preston and a discussion on the dynamic McDonagh sisters from NFSA curator Nathan Smith.Follow the action as you experience the early traditions of the movie world.
Silent Movie “Empire Builders”
This newly restored Snowy Baker classic film is screened with a live musical accompaniment by the noted pianist Jan Preston. Set during the Second Boer War, Snowy Baker stars as Captain William Ballard of the British Army Territorials. Ballard is sent to make a treaty, but meets resistance from the Boers who are unreconciled to British rule. There is a beautiful Boer woman for him to fall in love with, a daring rescue to perform and the heroic rescue of important military dispatches.
